The collection contains the correspondence, documents, records, literary writings, and photographs of the Carr family. Letters of John Carr are from his period in the U.S. Senate and include letters to his son Andrew J. while a college student, and to other family members. There are letters of Sarah Whiteman to family and friends, and letters from Andrew J. Carr to her before and after their marriage. Other family letters are from Charlestown and La Porte County, Ind., to family mainly in Denver, Colorado. Correspondents include Mollie Carr while a student at Pittsburgh Female College, Mary N. Carr, Marguerite Carr, and McCauley Carr. Also included are indentures, ledgers, invitations, school work, speeches, newsclippings regarding the Andrew J. Carr family, and Mollie Carr's student writings. Photographs are mainly of unidentified family members, and include activities such as vacations and daily life.

John Carr, a native of Pennsylvania, moved to Clark County, Ind. in 1808. Carr entered politics at the county level in 1824, and went on to serve in the Indiana House and U.S. Senate.
